May 05 Time to Prove Yourself...Well the new federal budget is out. It's been a point of much speculation... everyone wanted to know how the conservative minority would fair at keeping their promises and maintaining a balanced budget. So what's the consensus now that the new budget has been presented? Well my take on it is that it's poor at best. The conservatives did little to keep their promises of making government spending accountable and easing ecoomic strain on average Canadian families.
You have to keep in mind that the whole point of the conservative ideology is to keep the government out of the public sphere as much as possible, so the conservatives really did more than I would have expected. They cut the GST by 1%, which is almost a punch in the face considering the fact that it was supposed to be removed entirely years ago. Realistically a 1% cut doesn't do much, even on a large purchase it still has little effect. They're also added a slew of new tax credits... students can claim text books in their taxes and workers can claim vehicle expenses and so on. Though this is a step in the right direction it's not quite what most Canadians had in mind when the government promised lower taxes. Average people will save nothing initially and will only benefit very little during tax time... that is if you can figure out all of the new tax credits.
The government did however offer one straight forward tax cut to corporations. They get a 0.5% decrease. It's more than they gave the average family and in their tax bracket it means that they'll save hundreds of thousands of dollars. I'm all for promoting Canadian industry, but I think it's wrong to tax corporations that make millions of dollars far less than a family.
The government also tried to maintain a feeling of openess with the public by funding an "independent" watchdog to observe government spending. The only problem with that is that an organization can't maintain autonomy when it is funded by the group it is observing. It's like all the studies that show smoking isn't bad for you... all funded by companies that make cigarettes.
I also found it interesting that the conservatives take credit for increased spending for the military and security as well as sharing the gas tax with provinces when those were all deals worked out by Martin's liberals. I didn't like the liberals either, but the conservatives shouldn't take credit for the few things the liberals did that people liked.
Overall the conservatives have alot to learn about how to keep promises and change the country for the better. Maybe it's time that the Canadian public learned that the best way to invest in their future is to voice their opinions and stand up for what's right. March 26 But I Love Bananas...Genetically modified foods have been around for quite awhile now... hundreds of years really if you count selective breeding of cereal crops, bananas and such. More recent incarnations of genetic modification through gene splicing have raised serious questions though. There are obvious benefits to gene splicing like making crops more pest resistant, having higher yields, or having new vitamins inserted.
One example of a specially modified crop like this is Golden Rice. This rice has a shorter maturity season, higher yields and has extra vitamins normal rice doesn't have. The whole idea behind the development of this rice was to help countries like India feed their huge population with their shortage of farm land. It seems like a noble cause and if it were left at that I would even say that their intentions were noble, but it can't be left at that. Golden Rice requires less space to get the same yields, however it requires much more fertilization... which most Indian farmers can't afford. Also, this rice has a termination gene inserted into it's genes. To explain it plainly this means that the rice doesn't produce any useful seeds. Under normal circumstances the farmers would gather their seeds to replant the following growth season, but with Golden Rice this can't be done. It makes the farmers completely dependent on the producers of this rice each season.
The obvious motivation here is greed, but it doesn't have any serious effect on those that choose not to buy the Golden Rice right? Wrong... if anyone grows this rice there is a chance that it could cross breed with other rice fields in the area and spread the termination gene to natural crops. This may sound far fetched but it's not. Take bananas for example. When you buy them in a store they don't have any seeds. Naturally bananas have many seeds inside them but they have been modified and cross bred to have no seeds to make them more appealing to a North American market. These bananas cross bred with natural bananas being grown in their regions and the banana is now actually nearly threatened by extinction because of these practices. Luckily, they aren't actually extinct and can still be grown by means of budding... but soon they won't be able to grow new trees from seeds.
Of course there is the other problem that we really have no idea how serious genetic modification of foods effects human health. There have been no real long term studies so there's no way to judge what it does to our bodies. You may say that it can't be that serious because they're just taking genes from other fruits or vegetables, but that's not true. They've been using genes from everything... bacteria and animals included.
And now they're genetically modifying pigs to include fish DNA that produces Amino Acids... of course they would probably include genes to sterilize the pigs so they could not cross bred. At least I hope they would think to do that. Just remember, next time your eating bacon, you might be getting more than you bargained for.
March 25 We Were a Paper Tiger...The United States government is complaining now that their military has found alleged intelligence documents from the Russian military given to Iraqi officials during the War. These documents were detailed accounts of how many troops and vehicles the US had and where they would attack. Some of the documents were accurate and others weren't even close. Still, one document found claimed that the Russians had spies in the US military headquarters that were feeding them this information. The US government is saying this turn of events is the most damaging thing to happen to Russo/US relations since the cold war and that this means that Russia can no longer be trusted in helping with the Iranian Nuclear question. They are also saying it's the worst thing they could do short of actually attacking US troops.
There are some important things that the US is overlooking in this whole matter though. First of all, Russia was very much against everything the US tried to do in Iraq since the first Gulf War. They didn't support the sanctions that were placed against Iraq, they didn't support the arms agreements, and they were totally against the war. They were against all of these things because Iraq was a friendly ally for Russia that supported it's floundering economy since the fall of communism. Also, it's usually a good idea to keep your neighbours happy. It's one thing for the US to attack Iraq since it's halfway around the world from their own soil, but Russia is relatively close to Iraq and would have to worry about fighting in it's own borders... it would be like the US not helping Canada out if we were attacked. They'd just look like jerks cause they're our neighbour and they're a major power.
Another important thing to realize is that Russia knew that Iraq didn't stand a chance and most likely wanted the war to last as long as possible. Why? For one thing because it would mean the price of oil would go up and Russia is a major oil producing country. Secondly because war is good for any economy. A long war would mean that Russia would end up with an oppurtunity to supply Iraqi troops with munitions. Also, war in the middle east would destabilize the whole region meaning once again that there would be increased market for old soviet munitions. Not only that but chaos in this region would mean that Russia would be able to better holds its sphere of influence should it support the right people.
So in my opinion the US has no right to be mad at the Russians. They were only protecting their own interests and trying to boost their economy by using the war to their advantage... much the same way the United States did. March 24 Here's Hoping You're Crazy...Globalization is once again rearing it's ugly head in the media. This time specifically it is the globalization of sovereignty. A man in Afganistan is facing execution on the charge of convertion from Islam to Christianity. According to the Islamic legal code death is the only acceptable legal consequence of this offense. I personally support religious freedom and equality, but it is that respect for other religions and their freedom that justifies the mans execution to me.
The whole idea of a country is that people give up certain freedoms to a governing body in exchange for security of body, culture, and economy. When you are part of that country it is understood that you accept giving up those freedoms, whether it be not being allowed to kill whoever you want to or not being allowed to switch religions. As a sovereign nation you can create whatever laws you want to restricting freedoms so long as the general public supports it. In this Afgani case the general public supports the execution of this man. All Afgani clerics, including the more liberal ones have called for his execution and the general public supports that consequence.
This is all pretty straightforward and under normal circumstances the government in power in Afganistan would in all likelihood have already executed this man. A problem arises with the opinions of non-muslem countries on the international stage. The United States and Australia are reacting to this trial as a travesty of personal freedom to Afgani people. What these countries are ignoring is that fact that they are applying their own countries and religions ideals to a country very different from their own. Presidents of both these countries are putting tremendous pressure on the fledgling Afgani government to free the man on trial. This pressure is very tangible for the Afgani government because they rely on U.S. aid and troops to keep the peace in their country. Should the U.S. pull out the country would fall into devastating civil war most likely.
This is the point that I am making... the United States and Australia are using their wealth to infringe on the sovereignty of another nation. Forcing a nation that has a set of laws that are agreed on by the majority of its citizens to change that law is a direct attack on that countries sovereignty. Just because it's not an invasion force (which has already there once before) it doesn't make it any better. This is just another step towards globalized sovereignty under one nation which cannot understand or provide for the needs of all its citizens.
I personally call for the U.S. and Australia to leave this decision up to the Afgani government to decide on this matter without outside influence... after all what better way for a government to prove itself internationally than by solving a problem like this by themselves. It's time the U.S. realized that it's little Afgani nation is all grown up and it's time to let it move out of the basement. January 25 A Shiny New PMI'm tired of people voting with little to no understanding of the issues or voting based on stupid principles or arguments. One of the arguments I find most frustrating is that people vote liberal based on the fact that they are the only party that has experience in government. It frustrates me for a number of reasons.
First of all... if you vote based on that then it means that you will have to perpetually vote liberal because no other party will ever gain the experience needed to be worthy of voting for if everyone votes this way. It's like creating some sort of some autocracy based on a grandfather system, which makes no sense because as the new generations come up they have just as little experience as any other party. It may have made slightly more sense when Cretien was Prime Minister, but Paul Martin had never been Prime Minister before he won the last election yet people still voted based on the idea that he would be more experienced even though he wasn't.
Secondly, we live in a democracy. Voting this way defeats the entire purpose of democracy. Democracy is the rule of the people. Under this ideology anyone can represent the people because the representative is supposed to be an average person. The idea is that everyone has the same general needs and therefor anyone can represent the general public. Saying that you need previous experience in order to be a good leader is ignorant to the whole purpose of democracy.
Ignoring party platforms to vote based solely on experience is one of the most damaging ways you can vote. It undermines democracy and it undermines the role of politics in developing government policy. You're better off voting for who has the prettiest sign. January 24 Damn you CanadaI feel a great amount of disappointment over the recent election here in Canada. I didn't want the Liberals to win, but I really didn't want the Conservatives to win. I would've taken the lesser of two evils in this instance. I'm a very isolationalist person and Harper is much to friendly with the States than I would like. To me that is grounds for not letting him in office. I also find it quite ominous when Harper says that his win is a great victory for the west.... If we're lucky Harper will be the new Mulroney and in a few years everyone will hate him. Then maybe the NDP will stand a chance. October 04 40 Days and 40 Night LaterWell I think it's been long enough now that I can post my thoughts about Hurricane Katrina and not hurt as many peoples feelings or get as many people upset o here goes.
I don't feel sorry for the people who were stuck in New Orleans at all. My reasons for that are quite simple. The first is that all levels of their government knew that their defenses against natural disasters were not good enough for many years and chose to do nothing about it. When you live in what used to be a swamp that you drained out to build a city you'd think that you'd keep your levys in good repair.
My second reason for not feeling sorry for the people in general is that they had plenty of notice that the hurricane was coming and didn't leave. I'm sorry but if I knew that a hurricane was coming the blow my house down I would leave, no matter how poor.
The stupidity of these people didn't even end after the hurricane ended. People came to rescue them from a flooded city and they refused to leave. Your house is already destroyed, there's nothing left for you to save, but you still stay...?
There was a natural disaster in New Orleans but it's not what killed the people of New Orleans. What killed them was a disaster of human stupidity. August 10 Oprah's Final ThoughtThere is one media figure I can't stand... one television star I loathe... Oprah. I actually believe the world would be a better place if she had never been allowed on tv. She is the richest woman in the world, and argueably the most powerful. She was ranked third most powerful woman below Condoleeza Rice and Mrs. Bush because they have the ear of the president... but Oprah has the ear of every housewife in America. They watch her show religiously, buy her books, subscribe to her magazine... they even buy her bras. But that's not all they're buying when they switch channels or open a book... they're buying into her lifestyle.
All you have to do is read one copy of "O" magazine to see how pretentious it is. It's a magazine with only three real purposes. The first to make Oprah money, the second to give Oprahs friends a place to advertise, and the third to tell American women what they should and should not do according to Oprah's ideology. Women are told what to wear, what to eat, how to eat, who to date, who to marry, what to buy, how to decorate, how to live, and when to do it all by Oprah because she knows everything.
Think of how much power Oprah actually has over women in America. Look at her book club... when she chooses a book to read it instantly tops the bestseller list and becomes an "instant classic". I don't understand how people can be so easily entranced by someone as to do everything their way. How can you take dieting advice seriously from someone who yo-yo dieted for 20 years and then probably had surgery? Her power of suggestion is so strong that Dr. Phil got a spinoff show from Oprah just because she promoted him and it's doing very well.
And then there's her tv show. It works a lot like her magazine. She pedals friends products and promotes her ideology and lifestyle while making money. She has celebrities on to talk about movies and she has makeover shows.... those don't bother me, it's her other show themes that bother me. Oprah is racist and sexiest. She has shows devoted entirely to trashing men and how men cheat on their wives and how men watch pornography and that's cheating on their wives... yet I've never seen her talk about the fact that women cheat on their husbands just as much as men cheat on their wives.
She also lies constantly on her show in an effort to maintain the image of her lifestyle being lived throughout the world. One episode in particular comes to mind that I saw my mother watching in which Oprah was trying to prove that women in other parts of the world live glamourous lifestyles. She had a woman from Saudi Arabia on her show talking about how all the women go to university and how all women are rich in Saudi Arabia... yeah that's right forget the fact that there are literally millions of people there who live below the poverty line. Great job Oprah that's real journalism... and American housewives watch that and wish they were Saudi.
Lots of people argue that Oprah does great things for people though with her "Angel Network"... she gives away cars and money to people who need it. Wrong. Oprah doesn't give away anything. Companies give away cars and money through the Oprah show for an advertisement. Nothing comes out of Oprahs pocket.
I think it's important for all of us to remember where Oprah came from. Before the Angel Network, before Oprahs book club, before O magazine there was a little show called The Oprah Winfrey Show... and as I recall it was very much like Jerry Springer. July 27 Put Your Helmet On And Go to Bed...A professor at Bar-Ilan University in Isreal recently unveiled a helmet that he claims increases IQ. He says that when worn 20 minutes a day for 3 months your IQ can increase up to 20%. It works by placing the user in a virtual reality world where they solve math problems and watch 3D shapes break apart and reassemble (sounds like hell to me). This is difficult for him to prove since there are many other factors that can influence test subjects.
The one solid effect that he has from found from using the helmet happens to men only. They develop increased blood flow between the two hemispheres of the brain... something that up until now has only been seen in women. July 25 The Amazing 400lbs man....This obesity thing is getting a little out of hand. When half the people out there are twice as big as they should be that's a major problem. Not just for them or their families but for everyone in general, especially in Canada. Think of the strain that will put on the healthcare system as obesity related diseases start to rise. The worst part of it all is that it's preventable for most people. But it's frightening what some people will do to try and lose the weight. Many of the options out there are not healthy. One in particular comes to mind. The Atkins diet.
I don't understand how people can look at this diet and believe that it is healthy for them. Anyone who made it to grade 10 science class should understand the basic biology of the body and how it operates to maintain its health. The Atkins diet blatantly disregards hundred of years of science and thousands of studies and experiments that show what foods will maintain your overall body health. Furthermore there are almost no studies on what effect the diet will have on people and there are absolutely no studies on the long term effects.
The body is designed to get its energy from carbohydrates as a primary source because they are easy for the body to break down. The carbs go through the Kreb cycle in your body and produce ATP which is the energy our body uses. When there are no carbs available in the body the Krebs cycle begins to break down the next available source of building blocks for ATP which is protien. The only problem is that the body is going to go for the next easiest source of protien, which isn't the protien you've eaten because protien takes much longer to break down than carbs. It goes for the protien it's already used to build any of the muscle in your body that it can spare. After it's done with that it moves on the fats, once again fats it's already processed cause it's easier. The body doesn't discriminate between what fats it takes though. It takes fats from your brain used to insulate nerve cells... and there are no studies yet that show the risks of this.
There are other negative factors to this diet. When your body is low on carbs it will begin to store away any carbs it does get for future use. This means if you ever go off the diet you will most likely balloon back up quickly.
And if you put children on this diet it will almost certainly stunt their growth and make them vulnerable to illness. It will also make adults on the diet less able to recover from injury or illness because you cannot receive all the proper amino acids your body needs while cutting foods out of your diet. And supplements don't get absorbed by your body nearly as well as from foods.
I just don't understand why people don't get it. To lose wait all you need is a good diet and exercise. That will make you healthy. If people can stay on an Atkins regimine can't they just as easily eat the way they're supposed to? July 23 Steven Speilberg Wants You...A lot of people don't realize how cozy the relationship between Hollywood and government really is... more specifically the military. There is a strong level of censorship that the pentagon attempts to put into every movie with scenes involving military action. This censorship is not mandatory for every movie, but is indirectly acheived by military officials.
Creating a movie is an expensive process, and scenes involving expensive military equipment can raise expenses durastically. In order to compensate for these expenses movie producers have an option, they can ask for aid from the military itself. Offering them vehicles and weapons, even soldiers to use as extras. There's a catch that comes with it though, the military then has the right to censor or edit your script. So if your movie has enough production money backing it you can skip asking for military aid and keep your script intact. Movies like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now asked for military aid but were rejected because the movies contained scenes of soldeirs acting in a manner that was not fitting for a soldeir. They were lucky enough to find funding elsewhere.
The Pentagon actually has a whole department that is meant to deal specifically with movies. This liason office takes the scripts and edits them to remove anything that paints war or the military in a bad light. In the movie Windtalkers, a scene was removed with a soldeir removing a dead mans gold teeth. The military had them cut it out because it made a soldeir look bad.
Movies like Top Gun received full financial support from the military because the entire movie was like one big recruitment ad. It glammerized the life of a pilot and made war look fun. Thank you Tom Cruise.
Think of how many kids have seen war movies and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Now think about how many of those kids decided to become soldeirs later in life because they have an impression of war being cool and fun. Now think about how surprised they'd be to find out that there were scenes removed from those movies that showed them what war was really like. July 22 Terror, terror everywhere...Maybe it's time we give credit where credit is due for recent and past terrorist attacks. There are people planting the bombs and people planning the attacks but there is another group, equally responsible, yet far more ambiguous... the media.
Let's face it. Terrorism has two fundamental purposes. To scare others and to receive recognition. The media plays right into that second need of terrorists. A bomb goes off and every television channel and newspaper plasters it all over the place for weeks. Celebrities can only dream of that kind of media attention. The media gives the terrorists exactly what they want and that can only fuel future terrorist attacks.
It's one thing to talk about it when it happens, give condolences, and reassure the public. It's another thing to market death and destruction, cause that's exactly what the media is doing. To them terrorists are nothing more than business partners. May 12 Lick the silver spoonEveryone has their own obsession. Mine is music. Some people love to eat. Others love to play basketball. But if I were to choose a national or international obsession I would have to say it would be celebrity watching. It really has gotten out of control I think. It has been around for a long time, you can point back the Bealtes-mania and show that it has its roots fairly far back. The difference now is that it's advanced with the technology that allows people to spy on one another. People steal celebrities garbage and sell it on ebay now. Or make art pieces out of it. They wait outside their houses with highpowered cameras on the off chance they'll get some shot of them doing something wrong or just a shot of them without makeup on. There are dozens of shows on tv that talk about celebrity gossip. And the public eats it up. Why are we so obsessed with watching others? They're rich, they're famous, they're beautiful... they are living the american dream. And if we watch we can live vicariously through them. At least that's the idea I guess. Is everyone so consumed with the idea of the "good life" that we have to have 3 shows on tv back to back that say the same thing about how big celebrities houses are or who they're sleeping with? Arguing that celebrities choose that career in the spotlight and should accept the constant badgering of the media as part of the job really isn't fair. They deserve privacy like anyone else. That's like saying that because a police officer chose a dangerous career that they should all end up being shot... at least once right... afterall they chose a career where they'd get shot at. I'm sure some of them like the attention, but not all of them want it. I don't see why we can't leave them alone. Look at how annoyed all of us get when a telemarketer calls... now imagine they were calling constantly, knocking on our doors, never stopping. It's not fair to put someone through that because of the career that they choose. Maybe we should all stop wishing to be someone else and start making something of ourselves... May 09 Disappointment and DisgustI recently discovered something quite disturbing among the spaces here on msn. While randomly selecting updated spaces I came to one called hotsexygirls. Someone was using this space as a means to prostitute underage girls. I was shocked and disgusted. Their "blog entries" were series of pictures of each girl naked and included the price of each girl by the hour or for twelve hours. They also had different prices depending on how many people were paying for the girl. For example one 15 year old girl was $1000 per hour per person if she was purchased by 12 or more people. I have a friend whose father is one of the police officers that hunts down underage porn on the internet so I asked her to ask her father what to do. He told me the best thing to do would be to report the abuse to msn and that they would present it to the proper authorities and be able to track the person responsible. I reported the abuse to msn. I left my email for them to get back to me and I made it very clear in my comments on abuse that the safety of children was at stake. So two days later I got an email back from msn stating that there was nothing they could do because the space had been disabled so there was no evidence of of pornography or child abuse that they could find. It really made me wish I had saved the page, but I didn't want that stuff saved on my computer. I replied to their response saying that the site was illegel and being used to sell children as sex slaves and that msn should do everything in their power to track this person through their server. I'm yet to get a response. I urge everyone who reads this to email msn staff and request that they do everything in their power to find the person responsible for that space and that they put checks in place to make it easier for them to track a person who is using spaces as an outlet for selling women. I'm going to continue to email them myself until they ignore me entirely or tell me they're doing something about it. May 07 "The plane, Boss... the plane, the plane!""History is the propaganda of the victors." Ernst Toller It seems that many people don't understand the significance that history really plays in our society. It shows us where we've been and teaches us important lessons to use in the future. Truly the study of human history is the only way to gain meaningful insight from human error. Yet history too often falls prey to bias and politics. It becomes skewed by personal or national agendas of those writing the history books. Is national pride and dignity worth stretching the truth concerning historic events? The truth is a very subjective thing in many cases of historic study because often there is little primary evidence to research. In these cases the historians can't be blamed as easily for allowing personal bias to affect their theories. But what about the cases in which we have lots of primary evidence... more recent events... events from the World Wars for example. You would think they would be more accurate and would be balanced based on all the evidence we have on record. Still a bias occurs in the journals written and major facts are ignored. All you have to do is go to an American highschool history class, a Canadian one and a German one and you'll get three totally different stories about why and how things happened in the World Wars. The curriculums are chosen by the government and they want to save face and instill national pride in their young citizens. So the truth becomes a less important factor than the dignity of the nation in the eyes of its youth. Ask any American child about Pearl Harbour and they'll tell you all about it... all of it except for the fact that the US attacked the Japanese first. Or ask a Canadian child about the TransCanada railway and they'll tell you everything... except that millions of Chinese immigrants died laying the track and then those left were sent to concentration camps after its construction. Nations need to start realizing that the true value in history is lost when it is changed and the truth is taken out of it. How will the youth of our nations learn from our mistakes if we never teach them what we did wrong? May 02 The A TeamNuclear energy has been hailed as the wave of the future. It's seen as a clean, cheap, renewable source of energy that has great rewards with very few bad points. At least that's what the general public has been led to believe. With the energy crisis looming dangerously on the horizen Bush has pledged to rejuvinate the nuclear energy industry and put more money into building nuclear power. However, almost everything the public has been told about nuclear energy is a lie. It's not as clean as they say it is. While nuclear plants don't produce very many green house gases like typical power plants they do produce other waste... radioactive nuclear waste. Many of these wastes prouced have a half-life of several hundred years and our only solution for disposing of them is buring the underground. Unfortunately there is no real way to fully dispose of nuclear waste. Even when it is buried the radiation still contaminates groundwater and seeps from the burial site. Also, nuclear plants are only viable for so many years until the plant itself becomes so contaminated by radiation that it becomes a biohazard and people can't work there. The radiation penetrates everything so fully that eve if you dismantle the plant all of the materials will still be radioactive and harmful. So the only solution is to fence them off for a couple hundred years after 50 years of operation... does that make any sense? And even if they are fenced off the radiation from the plants will still seep into groundwater and the environment around them. Nuclear energy also isn't cheap. It's very expensive. On average it costs almost twenty times what typical hydroelectric power does per kilowatt/hour. The only reason why it costs the same on your electric bill as everyone elses is because nuclear power is subsidized by the government. They've invested so much in their nuclear programs that they need to keep them running so they use tax money the maintain a cost balance. The government can only give so much to the program though so as more nuclear plants are built the price of energy will start to climb. There is also the question of liability and insurance regarding a nuclear plant exploding. The fine print in many house insurance contracts specifically says that the insurance company will not cover damages by nuclear explosion. This is the only thing that is consistant in all of the contracts for every Canadian insurance company. Also, the Canadian government has legislated that the power company would only be liable for one billion dollars of damages in the event of a nuclear explosion. That would barely cover five percent of the estimated damages from a fallout in a less populated area let alone a plant near a densely populated area. Nuclear fallout is a very real possibility. Chernobyl isn't the only example of a nuclear explosion we've had. Russia had one before Chernobyl that they managed to cover up. There have also been plants in Canada and the United States that have come very close to meltdowns. The risk only increases as the plants we have built get older. Evidence also suggests that it's not renwable. Like fossil fuels there are only so many reserves of uranium and nuclear grade materials for us to extract and after that they are gone. Recent surveys have found that we're using uranium much more quickly than anticipated and that the uranium supply can only last about another hundred years... that not much longer than the fossil fuels. The energy situation needs to be reevaluated. Nuclear energy isn't worth the risk... we're better off putting money into research and developing new, better, and truly renewable sources of energy that are safe for the environment. April 30 How do you stop a war?Rock posed a question in my last post that seemed very pertinent to me. What can be done about war? After seeing the war in Iraq and how despite the protest of thousands upon thousands, lack of support from many in his own country, and warnings from the UN George Bush and congress went ahead with the war. They used false information to justify the war and after discovering that they used false information they just justified it by saying they were liberating people. The fact that they used false information to start a war became old news really quickly. I hold George Bush personally responsible for the death of thousands of innocent Iraqis and American soldiers who needlessly went to war because he campaigned so strongly for the war. He is a war monger and by many accounts I believe he could be considered a war criminal. Yet so many people still support him. It's beyond my comprehension.... That one example shows us how helpless we are against the onslaught of war. We have so little real power after electing individuals into government. I believe that at the very least we should be able, as members of different countries, to have referendums on all major issues in our nations. So I pose this solution to Rocks question. If anyone else here thinks it's a good idea then I say we push for it and try to get it done. All countries should have nationwide referendums when they want to go to war unless there has been a real act of aggression against your country first. Forget congress or parliament... this is a major decision that effects how people in other countries view us as individuals so every individual should have some say... not just symbolic representation. This is my proposal... write letters to your senators and house leaders, to the presidents and prime ministers, to any lobby groups you can think of. Start petitions that you can bring to your politicians, even if it's only an internet petition. Make it a law that the people decide when they should or should not start a war when the idea is presented by the government. Perhaps that would balance the special interests of those who want the wars... April 29 Pride cometh before the fall election...Nationalism is something that got a really bad repuation for a very long time and now is suddenly popular again thanks to the War on Terror. It's funny actually that the one thing George Bush has managed to do is create a climate where it's ok for the average American citizen to be fiercly nationalist. Most countries have tried to downplay nationalism since the second world war since it was seen as one of the causes of the war, but we're in a new millenium now and there are new rules for what's appropriate and what isn't. After all most of the veterens are dead and can't complain about any impending doom. It's funny actually because Bush is using American nationalism as the same means to the same end that Hilter used it for. To gain approval for war. Typically in recent American history the government has focused on maintaining as low a number of American casualties as possible, but Bush doesn't seem so concerned with that. The only reason previous governments worried about casualties was to maintain a certain level of approval from the public and they couldn't maintain that while their boys were off dying in another country, not when America couldn't see any reason for it. But Bush has created a reason, a brilliant one at that... a nationalistic reason that we haven't seen since colonial times. Bush's America must suffer the White Man's Burden. Bringing democracy to those who can't bring it to themselves. And the strange thing is that the american majority (at least according to the last election) can rally behind that and gain a sense of unity from being the saviours of the world. Don't get me wrong, I'm very nationalist myself. If you've read anything else I've written about you could probably tell. I have a very strong Canadian bias. That tends to give me a very cynical slant when I look at American politics... but I try to maintain some level of common sense about it. And I don't make accusations without some evidence to back them up. Still I have a great love for my country and I believe it would be far better off with less American influence. Nationalism can be a good thing, there's nothing wrong with loving your country. But it shouldn't be used as an excuse to start a war... or to practice a form of racial stereotyping we supposedly got rid of when Britain gave India independence. April 28 Democracy... A front for rich white guys?Trade is an important part of any countries economy so you'd think that each country would have it's own say about how trade should be dealt with both domestically and internationally. And that the general population would have some say through their elected representatives. Unfortunately, that's not the case for any country. After World War 1 an organization called GATT was formed to deal with trade issues that could arise from post war debt and hostility. This organization still exists today as the World Trade Organization. The WTO is an organization that controls and monitors trade among and in countries. It's main purpose is still to maintain peaceful trade negotiations between all the countries in its membership. The problem with this is that only countries within the WTO can actually gain any advantage from its existance and when you join you give up a little bit of your sovereignty as a country because you then fall under WTO charters for trade. That means that a reletively small organization with no elected representatives has strong influence over the world of trade. Suddenly there's a breakdown of democracy cause now voters have no say in how their country can trade. The WTO uses it's trade advantage to force impoverished countries to join their orginaization and take advantage of them by forcing devaluation of their currency and by not allowing government subsidization of trade. It also punishes countries that don't join by boycotting their products or placing large tariffs on them. You also have to ask yourself who is in charge of the WTO. It's run by a board of directors similar to how a company is run, and the poistions have almost exclusively been held by wealthy Americans... so is the WTO just a front for American business elite to control cash flow around the world... yes, yes it is. An example of that would be how the WTO didn't force Americans to allow Canadian soft wood lumber into their market despite the free trade agreement and despite WTO charters that say the US could not ban Canadian softwood lumber. The WTO did nothing... because the board of directors has personal interests in that wood not coming over the border. The WTO is just another way for the rich to enlarge the gap between themselves and the poor. It treats other, poorer countries unfairly and doesn't even follow it's own rules when American interests are not being met despite the fact that it is supposed to be impartial. I think it's time that the WTO just went away. April 21 Avenues lined with trees...I'm sure many people will disagree with me on this one but when has that ever stopped me from putting things up. A lot of people talk about the fact that homosexuals are born that way and it's a proven fact now. But I actually don't think that people are born gay, and I believe that not because of any personal bias but because of simple biological factors that I've read about or that I got from university lectures. The first thing is that homosexuality being a genetic trait goes against the theory of evolution, which ironically enough most homosexual people believe is accurate. Selective gene transfer only happens when a certain gene is seen to give an advantage to the organism. That is the only way a gene will continue throughout generations according to Darwins theory. The problem with homosexual behaviour being gene based is that being homosexual offers no survival benefits therefor the gene would not be selectively transfered and would remain in a very small percentage of the society. Also there is the fact that it offers an extreme disadvantage in that homosexual people cannot reproduce with one another. Therefor the gene would always be recessive making it even more difficult for that gene to surface in a homosexuals offspring. There is also the fact that they've never really found a gene that is the proven cause of homosexuality. They have found some genetic differences that occur but they haven't been consistant from person to person which means they are most likely individual mutations... which are common in everyone. It's quite the opposite actually from the studies that have been done. Studies done with twins have shown that the root of homosexuality is most likely in psychosocial factors. Since the genetic code is essentially what decides what you'll be like and there is no gene that we have been able to find that causes someone to be gay it means that people aren't actually born that way. Just because they aren't born that way it doesn't mean it's their choice though. There are a number of factors that have been brought up by researchers that could cause people to become homosexual. One of these theories is that child molestation leads to homosexual behaviour. This theory does have some merit. Many studies have found that upwards of 50% of homosexual males have were molested as children. Many friends that I have who are gay have confided in me that they were molested as well. Which led me to conclude that it was a factor causing some of my friends to be gay. I suppose it's the simple idea of socialization that leads to how someone behaves later. The problem is that there is so little we understand about how the human mind works and how things effect it. How a parent treats their children can have unpredictable results. Who knows what kind of treatment could lead to someone "inheriting" homosexual behaviour. One thing that I will add that I'm sure some people will disagree with, but that I know is true because I see it so often among my friends and now disturbingly often among my sisters friends (around the age of 17) is that people are now choosing to be gay, not because they think they are but because of how much it's pushed be society now. It's a strange turn around but now being gay is the cool thing to do. I've had friends who were in active homosexual relationships simply because they thought it would win them friends. The media and education system pushes homosexuality so much now in Canada that you're not seen as normal unless you've "experimented." Every girl I know that my sister is friends with openly claims to be gay or bisexual. It's no longer a matter of whether or not you really are gay... now it's a matter of whether or not it's the coolest thing on tv. |
